We have squirrels that get into the garage where I store birdseed.
I used to keep the seed in 5 gallon plastic paint buckets with plastic lids from Home Depot. But the squirrels found them and chewed right through the plastic.
Big mess!
I bought 5 gallon mini metal trash cans with metal lids to keep them out. I can barely get the lids off.
But I still find squirrels in the garage from time to time.
